چکیده
While much progress has been made using epitaxial growth of Fe/Cr/Fe structures to study magnetic exchange coupling, a number of anomalies have arisen in studies of this model system. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate Cr growth on Fe(001), we have identified a potential structural cause of these anomalies. We show that Cr growth under layer-by-layer conditions on Fe(001) leads to the formation of a Cr-Fe alloy. We exploit a Cr and Fe surface state to identify single Cr impurities in Fe and evaluate the alloy concentrations with increasing Cr coverage. PACS numbers: 61.16.Ch, 68.55.-a, 75.70.Cn

Observations of alloying in the growth of Cr on Fe(001)
Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we observe the alloying of Cr with an Fe(001) substrate for various coverages at two temperatures. At low Cr coverage, the alloy consists of individual Cr impurities surrounded by Fe. Elemental identification is possible using surface states observed via tunneling spectroscopy. The alloy may be the cause of several magnetic anomalies observed in Cr/Fe struct...
متن کاملEnergetics of 3d Impurities on the (001) Surface of Iron
Motivated by recent STM results for Cr on Fe(001) we present a detailed ab-initio study of the alloying process in the dilute limit for 3d atoms on the Fe(001) surface. The calculations are based on local density functional theory and apply a KKR{Green's function method for impurities on surfaces. For practically all 3d transition metal impurities on Fe(001) we nd a strong tendency for a direct...
متن کاملNoncollinear magnetism caused by intermixing at ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interfaces
Fe-Cr alloy layers on Fe 001 substrates with different atomic environments are theoretically investigated through a self-consistent real-space tight-binding method parametrized to density functional theory and without collinear restriction for the spin directions. We show that the intermixing at the Cr/Fe interface, experimentally observed at the first stages of the Cr growth on Fe, originates ...
متن کاملStructural Characterization and Ordering Transformation of Mechanically Alloyed Nanocrystalline Fe-28Al Powder
The synthesis of nanocrystalline Fe3Al powder by mechanical alloying as well as the structural ordering of the synthesized Fe3Al particles during the subsequent thermal analysis were investigated. Mechanical alloying was performed up to 100 hours using a planetary ball mill apparatus with rotational speed of 300 rpm under argon atmosphere at ambient temperature. The synthesized powders were cha...

In this study, effect of potential on composition and depth profiles of passive films formed on 316L stainless steel in 0.05 M sulfuric acid has been examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For passive film formation within the passive region, four potentials -0.2, 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 VSCE were chosen and films were gown at each potential for 60 min. XPS analysis results showed tha...
